Raising the profile of science in schools and society

This timely seminar will examine key elements of the Government's science strategy, Science and Society, as the five Expert Groups tasked with delivering its key objectives begin work. Sessions will examine how a more science literate society can be created and the strengths and weaknesses of the current system of science education, including how the quality of science learning in schools can be improved and how student take-up of science subjects, especially at A Level can be increased. The seminar will also look at how more young people can be encouraged to choose science as a career and examine the skills needs of the science industry and the contribution science makes to the UK economy
Keynote addresses will also be delivered by Fiona Fox, Director, Science Media Centre and Group Chair, Science and the Media Expert Group; Diana Garnham, Chief Executive, The Science Council and Group Chair, Science for Careers Expert Group; Sir Roland Jackson, Chief Executive, The British Science Association; Sir Mark Walport, Director, Wellcome Trust and Group Chair, Science and Learning Expert Group; and Phil Willis MP, Chairman, Science and Technology Committee.
Baroness Walmsley, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Children, Schools and Families and Dr Brian Iddon MP, Member, Science and Technology Committee have kindly agreed to chair this seminar.
